The VTG Story

THE CONCEPT

We’re 24 years strong, and we’re proud of that. Our journey has seen us travel across the state of Victoria for over two decades delivering a fun-filled program for teachers of Victoria and the regional host city. A unique annual event, the Victorian Teachers’ Games (VTG) aims to bring the community of educators together for four days and four nights of sporting and social events.

Our aim is to simply cater for every teacher in Victoria by providing a varied program with high and low intensity events. While the event is open to current, casual and retired teachers, VTG also invites all support staff (canteen, cleaners & admin), DET corporate staff and participants nominated by its major sponsors as a means to enable staff to build a team and promote camaraderie.

The VTG theme is ‘Communicate, Celebrate, Educate’ and everybody that is a part of VTG embodies these three concepts. The Games provides an opportunity for Teachers to reconnect and communicate with past colleagues, university friends, local community and sporting organisations, celebrate their year so far and prepare to enter their last term of teaching while receiving education in and learning more about sports on offer in Victoria. Teachers will return to school reinvigorated, with new learning, new friendships and plenty of great stories to share.

VTG23 in Ballarat saw 45 events offered with over 100 different competition categories for over 2,000 teachers. In the busy modern era, VTG provides a circuit breaker to teaching teams across the state. The next step of our journey (VTG24) sees us return home to Geelong… don’t miss it.

WHO WE ARE

Since the events’ inception in 1996, VTG was held at regional centres around Victoria by the regional offices of the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development.  In 2014, the responsibility for hosting VTG was transferred from regional offices to School Sport Victoria.

VTG is delivered by the School Sport Unit, a sub-committee of the Department of Education and Training. School Sport Victoria (SSV) services all Victorian schools in the provision of sport and sport education. VTG services the teacher component of that program. School Sport Victoria also administers quality school sporting opportunities for students across Victoria at district, division, region, state and national level.

The Victorian Teachers’ Games are a major event on the education calendar and School Sport Victoria values the role it plays in delivery of the Health and Wellbeing Education State Initiative. VTG provides a great opportunity for teachers and educational professionals to engage with likeminded people through sporting and social events. No other education event in Victoria offers an opportunity for this level of engagement across all sectors. The Victorian Teachers’ Games is a great way to extend what we do in schools to educate Victoria’s teachers in the value of sport competition, participation and the role being active plays in overall health and wellbeing.

The Victorian Teachers’ Games endeavours to promote a fun atmosphere where teachers can be active and experience sport and physical activity in a comfortable and inclusive manner. Through the VTG, School Sport Victoria is able to carry out its vision to increase awareness of and participation in quality school sport. The event gives us an opportunity to engage teachers, the people who we rely on to deliver sport in schools in their own school sport competition and give them a taste of the educational outcomes that can be achieved through participation in sport. VTG also provides significant professional development and team building opportunities for whole staff and individual teachers.
